Located halfway between Jacksonville and Miami, Florida, Brevard County is an extra-long county, extending over 70 miles from north to south, but only a handful of miles inland from the seacoast at any point. As a matter of fact, the county has 8,000 miles of waterline! Because of the presence of the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Brevard County, Florida is also known as the "Space Coast."

As of 2006 U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the population of Brevard County is 534,359, and it is expected to have 100,000-300,000 more people by 2020, an increase of 60%.

Brevard has subtropical climate, with a distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry lasts from December through May. The wet from June through November. January is the coldest month with an average low of 50.7 degrees Fahrenheit; average high 71 F. The warmest months are July and August with average highs of 90 F; average lows 72.2. The driest month is April with 1.6" rainfall; the wettest September, 6.6".

DRIVER'S LICENSES

A Florida driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of gaining employment or establishing residency.

New residents who have a valid out-of-state license will be required to take the vision examination.

Call the driver's license offices to ask about the acceptable forms of identification for obtaining a driver's license or ID.

Appointments for driver's licenses, driving tests and identification cards: Call (321) 383-2763 in Titusville, (321) 984-4933 in Melbourne, (321) 752-3162 in North Melbourne or (321) 449-5003 on Merritt Island. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, with the exception of Melbourne and Merritt Island, which are open Monday through Thursday.

The license costs $20 for six years. Commercial driver's licenses cost $50. On-time renewals are $15. Endorsement fees are $5 each.

AUTOMOBILE TAGS

New residents must apply for Florida tags and car titles within 10 days after they begin working or enroll children in school.

Proof of Florida insurance is required before tags can be issued.

REGISTERING TO VOTE

To be eligible to register to vote in Brevard County, you must be:

A U.S. citizen.
A Brevard County resident.
Age 18 or older. You may pre-register at age 17.
Not currently adjudicated mentally incapacitated with respect to voting in any state.
Not have a felony conviction on your record, unless your civil rights have been restored.

To register to vote, you must fill out a Florida Voter Registration Application Form. These forms are available online at www.brevardelections.org, by mail and at the locations listed on the Supervisor of Elections' Website. In addition to using these forms to register to vote, you can use them to notify of a change in your address, name or party affiliation, or to request a replacement voter ID card if yours is lost, stolen or damaged.




UTILITY SERVICES

ELECTRICITY
Florida Power & Light Co. requires a deposit that varies according to a customer's credit rating. An initial service charge is included on the first bill. A certificate of occupancy following an electrical inspection is required for first service for a new home.

GAS
Florida City Gas supplies natural gas to most of Brevard. The company requires a meter deposit that varies according to the amount of monthly gas usage. The meter deposit is refunded with interest after 12 months to customers with good payment records. A $50 startup fee is required.

TELEPHONE
Contact BellSouth at 888-757-6500 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday to set up residential telephone service. Call 866-620-6000 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday for business service. If calling from out of state or via a cell phone, call 800-753-2909.

A deposit amount is determined by the customer's credit report. Customers must give their name, address and Social Security number.

WATER, SEWER, TRASH
Charges for sewer, water and deposit rates vary in the county. Deposits are refunded when service is disconnected.

Barefoot Bay and Snug Harbor: Residents pay a $100 deposit for water and sewer service to the Brevard County Water Resources Department, a nonrefundable account setup charge of $15 is required, call (772) 664-5916.

Cocoa: The city provides service from Port St. John south to the Pineda Causeway in North Melbourne and includes residents from Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, Suntree, Viera and Cape Canaveral. Charges vary.

All customers pay a $20 administration fee that shows up on the first bill. Cocoa residents may pay deposits of $50 for sewer, plus $40 for water. Cocoa customers on septic tanks pay only the $40 water deposit.

Cocoa Beach residents pay up to $95 for sewer.

Suntree/Viera customers may pay deposits of $60 for county sewer, $40 for city water.

Rockledge residents pay a $40 sewage deposit. Contact Rockledge City Hall, 690-3978.

Melbourne: The city supplies water to its residents and those of Indian Harbour Beach, Satellite Beach, Indialantic, Melbourne Beach, Melbourne Village and parts of West Melbourne.

The city requires a $43 water deposit and a $77 sewer deposit for mainland residents and customers on city water. A $103 water and sewer deposit is required for beachside residents on county sewer.

Mims & Scottsmoor: The residents use county water and sewer service. A $30 deposit is required for water service. A $90 deposit is required for water and sewer service, and account set-up fee of $15 is required. Brevard County Utilities Finance Office, 2262 High Drive, Mims, (321) 264-5130.

Palm Bay: The city provides water and sewer service through its utilities department. Residents pay $40 deposit for water and a nonrefundable administrative fee of $15.75. If sewer service is available, an extra $50 deposit is required for service. After three years of excellent credit, the water and sewer deposits can be refunded.

Titusville: Residents are charged $40 for water, $60 for sewer service and a $14 deposit for garbage pickup. A $15 nonrefundable administrative fee may apply. Deposits refunded after three years of good credit.

West Melbourne: A $100 deposit is required to establish service and a nonrefundable $10 service fee will be added to your first bill. Trash collection billing included in water-sewer bill. Deposit is refunded when service disconnected.

RECYCLING

Residents of unincorporated Brevard County who have curbside service can request a recycling bin. Call (321) 636-6894 for North and Central Brevard or (321) 723-4455 for South Brevard, or visit www.brevardcounty.us/swr. Recycling bins need to be placed by the curb before 6 a.m.

The Reusable Resources Adventure Center accepts items, such as paper, wood, fabric and plastic, to recycle into children's art projects, (321) 729-0100, www.reusecenterbrevard.org.

The following are disposal facilities located in the county:
